Beachbody Insanity Week 1 Recap

I made it through the first week! I don’t have any statistics on how many people bail out of the Insanity program at this point, but there must be some who don’t like it enough to continue, or manage to injure themselves. I am happy to say that I don’t hate it so far, and I am being careful not to get hurt from one day to the next. My left Achilles tendon is a little sensitive, from jumping and landing so much, but I am using the foam roller and stretching to keep it in good shape. For the amount of actual exercise time (about 30 minutes), these are the most physically draining workouts I have ever done.

A quick rundown of the workouts I completed this week. (The Extreme Fitness Results blog has a good summary of these workouts.)

  • Plyometric Cardio Circuit (Tuesday/Saturday): This is the introduction to Insanity, the first workout after the Fit Test. There’s a lot of jumping, as implied by “Plyometric,” and by Saturday I gave it a better attempt than the first time, but I still ran out of steam in the last 10 minutes of the 42 minutes total workout time (including stretch and cooldown).
  • Cardio Power and Resistance (Wednesday): This has a couple of push up variations thrown in, but it is not drastically different than the previous workout. I am used to push up circuits from P90X, but not in between crazy jumps and squats.
  • Cardio Recovery (Thursday): This is a stretch routine comparable to the P90X X Stretch, but since it’s Insanity, we have to break a sweat somehow, right? The combination of lunges, squats and balance poses definitely make it a challenge, while stretching all the body parts that are used in the other workouts. It’s shorter than the recovery workouts for P90X or P90X2 (just 33 minutes instead of an hour), and it really emphasizes the lower body.
  • Pure Cardio (Friday): I previewed all the workouts before doing them, but I should have been watching a little more closely with this one. The exercises are about the same as the Plyometric Cardio Circuit, with one big difference: There are no breaks in the 15 minute main workout circuit. This comes after an 11 minute warm up (several crazy exercise circuits), and an eight minute stretch. I kept waiting for a 60 second break, as seen in the previous workouts, but there were none! I guess I had made some improvement, though, because I was dead tired but I managed to say “That’s it?” at the end. Still waiting for that break, I guess.
After a day off (with no desire to exercise at all), I am ready for week 2. I think it will be important to get a good night’s sleep for as many nights as I can, and continue to be careful about my exercise intensity and preventing injuries.

Core Crunch Chin Up using bands

Full Name: Aaron Mathis

P90X2 Introduction: He was 297 lbs before starting P90X. Tony Horton loves those success stories! Aaron is also a father of 2. Although he was a Team Beachbody coach at the time, he is now a former coach, according to his Facebook updates and his Team Beachbody profile page.

Background/Current: Aaron won several Team Beachbody contests, as featured on his profile page, and he was also a successful coach. He remains a passionate salesman and entrepreneur, as seen in his online activities.

My Comments: Aaron shows us that the resistance bands are not necessarily the “easy way out.” Since I don’t have a pull up bar in my basement, I had the opportunity to follow his lead, and it was tough!

Beachbody Insanity Day 1: Fit Test

It’s funny how things work themselves out in our lives sometimes. I like to call it Divine Providence, but you might have other theories. Anyway, I was thinking about using my Christmas “fun money” to buy myself a cruel sort of present: The Insanity workout program by Beachbody, hosted by Shawn T. I have read lots of Facebook status updates about it, and of course I’ve seen the infomercial, but it wasn’t a priority in my fitness budget (sadly, a small budget indeed). I learned in this Shaun T biography (Wikipedia) that  Insanity! was released in 2009. (There is a 2010 copyright on my DVD set.) So it’s a relatively new program, compared to P90X for example, but I had my eyes on P90X2, which was released in 2011 (and hyped for months before).

Anyway, back to the divine providence part… I was ready to spend the $120 for Insanity, when just before Christmas my brother-in-law tells me, “Don’t bother buying Insanity. I will give you my DVDs when I am done. I’m pretty sure I will never want to do this again!” I mean, here’s a guy who has done several rounds of P90X, has a black belt, and the martial arts style he prefers has been described to me as “Letting yourself get punched, repeatedly, so you can get used to it while defending yourself.” Ouch. Basically, he prefers strength training rather than constant cardio, and Insanity is taking its toll on his knees, too. Now he’s passing it along to me, because he claims I am better at cardio (ha!) and I might actually enjoy the program. He also expects progress updates, maybe to see how I’m suffering?

Today I took the Fit Test, and after that tried the first section of the Plyometric Cardio Circuit. Obviously, I didn’t wear myself out with the Fit Test, which is 25 minutes and can be pretty intense if you go full speed. I was balancing proper form (as recommended by Shaun T) with my fastest pace. So the Fit Test tired me out, but I was ready for another 15 minutes of exercise, and I worked my way through the first Plyo Cardio circuit: Jumping Jacks, Heisman, 1-2-3, etc. (and repeat… faster!). Tomorrow should be a lot of fun, when I do the entire workout!

Do you have any suggestions for me as I begin? Since I was planning for this, I already have some sturdy, 1-inch thick foam tiles set up on my basement floor, suitable for jumping. I am not the kind of guy to go full speed on the first try (see Fit Test, above), so I will be careful, but hopefully get better as I go! Let’s see if I am saying “Thanks for the gift, Kevin!” in a week or a month from now.

Mimi in Body Revolution

Full Name: Kamilah “Mimi” Barrett

Video Introduction: Jillian calls out Kamilah several times, to demonstrate a more energetic or entertaining variation of an exercise. Her nickname “Mimi” is used in all the workouts. Aside from old pros Anita and Natalie, Mimi is probably the most comfortable and talkative of the group.
Kamila created Heel Hop

Background/Current: Kamilah was a contestant on season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) in the U.S. She was eliminated in week 6, finishing in the top 6 of that season. She has that experience in common with Hayley, who was a British series 1 SYTYCD contestant.

Her biography describes her as follows: “A spiritually connected, certified fitness instructor, she has traveled the world as a Professional Choreographer, Dancer, Singer, and Actress. Discovered by the music legend Prince, Kamilah’s style and brand has always remained consistent: Classy, Sexy, Empowering.” You can see the some of the diverse projects she has done in the links below.

She is the creator of Heel Hop, a workout program designed to combine hip hop dance moves and high heels, particularly suited to performers who wear them often.

My Comments: Mimi is fun to watch in Body Revolution. I had no idea she was such an accomplished performer. When she says in one of the workouts, “I want to go out dancing!” it makes a lot of sense!

Sari demonstrates High Knees. She can fly!

Full Name: Sari Melain Lamela

Video Introduction:
Jillian likes to pick on Sari from time to time, usually for a killer cardio exercise done at extra high speed. She meets the challenges with enthusiasm. Lots of enthusiasm!

From Sari’s Fitness Bio

Current: Sari’s IMDB page and biography describe a career in acting, as well as extensive fitness training (details on her website). She has most often been seen on television, as a co-host or actor. She has worked as a personal trainer, and created a YouTube channel to advertise her business.

My Comments: There’s no way I can keep up with Sari when she gets going! It’s usually at the point in the workout when I might feel like I’m running out of steam, and then Jillian pushes Sari to that next level. Now that I’ve learned more about Sari’s fitness background, I am not surprised.
