Tony Horton’s "Bring It!" Day 41

Workout

I set up the pull-up bar, and did my resistance level 2 workout. I only did the two pull-up sets using the bar. By the time I got to the two chin-up sets in the second circuit, I was too worn out to bother with the bar. I did make my best effort using the resistance band. If my setup was closer to the one in the P90X videos, where I could do the chair-assist pull-ups, I might have tried that. I can maintain better form using the band.

Nutrition

Today was picture-perfect calorie-wise, and even better because it was a Saturday AND we ate at Chipotle. I had my Zone Perfect bar before the workout, a sensible breakfast afterwards, then the Chipotle meal: A salad with carnitas (pulled pork), pinto beans, rice, and cheese. By the way, did you know the soft tortilla shell they use for burritos is almost 300 calories? All by itself! I used Chipotle Fan’s Nutrition Facts Calculator to determine the caloric damage. Not too bad, actually, at 540 calories. With the humongous burrito shell, it’s easy to make a burrito that’s over 1000 calories.

After that, I had enough calories left for a protein bar snack, and a sensible dinner of chicken cutlets and spaghetti (only a cup, of course).

Health and well-being

Today’s workout was tough, as were the previous resistance days for the past couple of weeks. I had no caffeine today, and a fair night’s sleep.

Tony Horton’s "Bring It!" Day 40

Workout

On NOT yoga day (ha ha), I walked/jogged 40 minutes on the treadmill. Last night was a late one, as Thursdays often are for me, so this was my preferred workout again. I really need to check out that 10-minute stretch routine! I think I could cover the parts I like about Yoga X by doing X Stretch instead. Sorry, Tony.

Nutrition

Long story short: +400 calories today? Really? It was a combination of Chinese Food Friday, for which I picked another “moderate” option (cashew chicken), but then had a higher-than-average dinner. Ugh. This might be why I am not looking super-ripped by now. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the cake at work. Maybe I should just quit my job? No, that’s not it…

Health and well-being

It’s the weekend! I am looking forward to a good night’s sleep, and hopefully better calorie control. I also plan to set up the pull-up bar for another try. Good times.

Tony Horton’s "Bring It!" Day 39

Workout

Resistance workout day! I started out tired again, but made it through in just under an hour. I guess Tony was right when he said that “A lot of people quit sooner than they should.” Maybe that will give me some motivation when I do my next round of P90X.

Nutrition

Today’s debate: Hot dog, or no hot dog? I was headed to Costco at lunchtime, but I already had my healthy soup in the fridge. Some people might say, “Never eat a hot dog. Ever. Again.” I am not one of those people, but since I am on a little bit of a calorie roller coaster, I should really try to be good when I can. In the end, I decided against the hot dog.

I haven’t had a Costco frozen yogurt since I started on this program, either. Although the cleanse didn’t happen for me, there are certain lines I haven’t crossed. Says the guy who eats cake at least once a week. Seriously, though, I realize now that certain foods, like a hot dog, or pizza, cause me to crash in a way I decided to avoid, at least for today. I ended the day at -100 calories. So there.

Health and well-being

I slept through the night for about 7 hours. Woo hoo! I need more of those nights, though. I get tired a little too easily in the middle of the day, and I know it’s because of a sleep deficit.

Tony Horton’s "Bring It!" Day 38

Workout

I did aerobic level 2, plus 20 minutes on the treadmill. Sometimes it’s more walking than running, but it’s still a good addition to the workout.

Nutrition

I had oatmeal with whey powder and a banana for breakfast, chicken and veggie soup for lunch, and chicken curry for dinner, as well as some reasonable snacks. I always add frozen vegetables as a side dish for something like chicken curry, to bulk it out without adding too many calories. I ended the day at -100 calories.

Health and well-being

I am so tired tonight! Some days the lack of sleep really catches up to me. Hopefully I can fix that over the next couple of nights.

Tony Horton’s "Bring It!" Day 37

Workout

For the resistance workout, I went back to my old resistance band, after breaking the new one, which was mounted to the door on a Velcro belt and hooks. One of the hooks broke when I was doing my pull-downs.

I am consistently 30+ pushups per set now. I try to do 10 at a time, at the same quick pace Tony uses on the P90X workouts. I am also feeling more comfortable doing bicycle and scissor crunches.

Nutrition

I had a calorie surplus of +378, because of cake I ate at work (of course!), and also a couple of pancakes in honor of Mardi Gras, a.k.a. “Pancake Tuesday.” Back on track tomorrow!

Health and well-being

I have lost 1.5 pounds since last week, and my belly feels firmer. I don’t want to give the impression that I have a big belly, because I am only trying to lose an inch or two. Still, I am trying to firm up the flab, so this is progress.
